80 PLUS® Gold certification and OptiSink™ technology explained

The 80 PLUS® Gold certification indicates the efficiency of electrical power conversion. Efficiency is the ratio of output power to the power drawn from the outlet. The higher the efficiency at a given load, the less energy the power supply loses as heat.

Seasonic’s table for the Gold category at a test voltage of 115 V lists minimum efficiency values of 87%, 90%, and 87% at 20%, 50%, and 100% load, respectively. For the 230 V category, the values are 90%, 92%, and 89%.

OptiSink™ is responsible for managing heat dissipation inside the power supply. Seasonic combines a revised layout of components on the circuit board, more compact power components and heatsinks, and automated surface-mount technology. This design reduces obstacles to airflow and improves heat transfer from heated components.

In the general OptiSink™ description, Seasonic states that OptiSink™ provides up to approximately 48% more internal space than the previous generation. The practical value of this solution lies in the more efficient use of space within the compact chassis. Energy efficiency reduces conversion losses, while thoughtful heat dissipation helps remove the heat that is still generated under load.

80 PLUS® Gold Certification

What components make up the Seasonic CORE GX power supply?

It makes sense to review the Seasonic CORE GX by looking at how the key system parts support overall performance. Together, they handle power conversion, voltage regulation, heat dissipation, and power delivery to PC components. The central element of this system is the printed circuit board, on which the internal components are mounted and electrically connected.

For the updated CORE GX, Seasonic redesigned the PCB layout and used more compact MOSFETs and heat sinks. A MOSFET acts as a fast electronic switch: it controls the flow of current in the power converter. Control circuits monitor the output voltage and adjust the conversion process as the computer’s load changes. For example, this happens when switching from working on documents to launching a game.

Other basic components of the power supply perform auxiliary but essential functions. Capacitors store energy and help smooth out voltage fluctuations. Chokes help smooth out current changes and filter out ripple. It is the coordinated operation of these components that determines the power supply’s electrical characteristics.

Heat sinks dissipate heat from the power components, while the fan ensures airflow. In the OptiSink™ design, their operation is supported by a more open layout of the components: air should flow more freely through the unit’s interior.

A separate group of components consists of the output connectors on the modular panel and the corresponding cables. They supply power to the motherboard, processor, graphics card, and peripherals.

Fully modular cable system and connector set

With the CORE GX’s fully modular design, you only connect the cables you need, so extra cables don’t take up space around the drives or behind the motherboard tray. This also simplifies access to components during maintenance. Cables can be routed in advance along a convenient path and then connected to the modular panel. This makes the installation process easier, especially in cases where other components leave limited space around the power supply.

Seasonic’s official cable chart shows the following number of component-side connectors:

Connector Type
1000/850 W
750/650 W
Motherboard, 24/20-pin
11
CPU, 8/4-pin
22
Nativo 12V-2×6
11
Standard PCIe, 8/6-pin
32
SATA
66
Molex
33

The two CPU connectors have separate cables. On the 750/650 W models, the two standard PCIe connectors are located on a single splitter cable. Additionally, Seasonic includes a 12V-2×6 → 2×8-pin PCIe cable for graphics cards with traditional connectors.

Use the correct cable for each connection: CPU/EPS powers the processor, PCIe powers the graphics card, and SATA powers storage devices and compatible peripherals. Determine the required type based on the cable labeling and the component’s instructions. The external connectors’ similarity does not make them interchangeable.

If you’re reusing cables from another power supply, first check the exact models in Seasonic’s official compatibility chart. For a new PC build, the simplest option is to use the cables included with the power supply.

Cooling system: Fan, noise levels, and smart fan control

The CORE GX ATX 3.1 is equipped with a 120-mm fan featuring a Hydro Dynamic Bearing (HDB) and the Smart and Silent Fan Control (S²FC) system. It automatically adjusts the fan speed based on the unit’s temperature. When the thermal load increases, the system boosts cooling intensity, and when the load is lower, it reduces the fan speed accordingly.

The S²FC ensures that the fan is continuously running once the unit has been turned on. Therefore, you should not expect the CORE GX to enter a fan-stop mode under light loads. Quiet operation is supported by automatic fan speed control and efficient heat dissipation.

Cybenetics lists the CORE GX-750 ATX3 and CORE GX-850 ATX3 with an A− noise rating and a Platinum efficiency rating. The latter is based on the Cybenetics methodology and coexists with the 80 PLUS® Gold certification. Acoustic ratings are based on noise performance across different load levels, while actual noise depends on how the system is used. These published ratings apply specifically to the models mentioned.

For cases with a bottom-mounted power supply, ventilation openings, and a dust filter at the bottom, Seasonic recommends orienting the fan toward these openings. This allows it to draw in outside air. The condition of the filter and the space beneath the case should also be taken into account during installation.

Build quality, protection systems, and warranty terms

In the CORE GX PSU Series, the design focuses on assembly repeatability and proper component cooling. Automated surface-mount technology in the OptiSink™ design helps minimize the impact of manual operations, while the optimized layout creates better conditions for airflow.

The series specifications list six protection systems:

– OCP monitors for current overloads.

– OPP for power overloads.

– OTP for temperature overloads.

– OVP responds when an output voltage exceeds the specified upper limit.

– UVP responds when an output voltage falls below the specified lower limit.

– SCP shuts down the unit in the event of a short circuit.

When a relevant parameter reaches the trigger threshold, the protection mechanism shuts down the PSU’s outputs.

The CORE GX ATX 3.1 comes with a 7-year manufacturer’s warranty, effective from the date of purchase. Under Seasonic’s current warranty policy, it covers defects in materials and workmanship.

To file a claim, you must retain proof of purchase; purchasing from an authorized dealer and using the product in accordance with the instructions are also part of the warranty conditions. Specific procedures may vary by region.

The warranty period describes the duration of this coverage. It is not a promise of unchanging performance or a specific service life.

Comparing Seasonic CORE GX power supplies with the FOCUS and VERTEX Series

To compare them correctly, let’s look at the CORE GX ATX 3.1, the current FOCUS GX ATX 3.1 v5, and the VERTEX GX ATX 3.1. All three PSUs support ATX 3.1 and PCIe 5.1, feature fully modular cables, and are 80 PLUS® Gold certified.

The FOCUS GX v5 matches the CORE GX’s 140-mm depth and offers a larger 135-mm FDB fan, a 10-year warranty, and OptiSilent hybrid fan control. For systems that spend long periods at light load, or users seeking lower PSU noise at idle, this is a notable functional difference.

The VERTEX GX expands the power range up to 1,200 W and also features hybrid cooling control. The increased depth must be taken into account when considering the distance to the drive cage and the space available for cables.

Based on these specifications, the CORE GX can be recommended for builds where modern connectivity and a reasonable budget are priorities.

Conclusión

The Seasonic CORE GX is worth considering when you’re building a PC for specific tasks and want to make an informed choice about its power supply. The value of this series becomes apparent during the build process and in long-term use: you can select the right power output, set up convenient connections, and ensure easy access to components for maintenance.

The best choice within this lineup depends on your configuration. Start by identifying the exact models of your CPU and graphics card, then add storage drives, cooling solutions, and peripherals. Seasonic’s online wattage calculator will help you estimate the power requirements for your entire system. If you’re planning an upgrade, consider exactly which components will be added to the PC and how they’ll affect its power consumption.

Next, check that the cables match the components’ connectors and verify the available space inside the case. It’s especially helpful to do this before replacing the power supply in a pre-built computer: its design may limit your options regardless of the required wattage. This check will help you avoid a situation where a model that meets the electrical requirements is inconvenient or incompatible for installation.

For a build whose requirements match the capabilities of the CORE GX, this series is the logical choice. Its main advantage is the ability to obtain a modern power supply unit tailored to the computer’s actual needs.
