Sea Sonic Electronics achieves a historic first under the newest and
most demanding tier of the 80 PLUS® program
Taipei, Taiwan – August 18, 2026 – Sea Sonic Electronics Co., Ltd. has become the first manufacturer to earn 80 PLUS® Ruby certification for an ATX power supply tested at 115 V. The Seasonic PRIME ENTERPRISE RX-1600, a high-wattage ATX power supply designed for demanding desktop, workstation, and AI systems, meets the program’s highest efficiency tier.
Sea Sonic has a long history of firsts in the 80 PLUS® program.
In 2005, Sea Sonic became the first power supply manufacturer to certify products under the program’s rigorous criteria with the Seasonic SS-400HT, and the first to bring a complete family of four certified products to market that same year. In 2008, Sea Sonic was again the first to achieve 80 PLUS® Gold certification. The Ruby milestone continues that legacy.
Sea Sonic has been involved with 80 PLUS® since the program’s launch, so this result is significant for us, said Walter Sun, CEO of Sea Sonic.
Our first certified PC power supply appeared in 2005, followed by the first Gold certification in 2008.Reaching Ruby at 115 V reflects the continued focus on efficiency in our engineering work. We are at a point where every additional percent of efficiency is difficult to achieve, but the effort is worthwhile because these small gains translate into enormous savings on a global scale.
About 80 PLUS® Ruby certification
Ruby is the newest and most demanding tier in the 80 PLUS® program, which is administered by CLEAResult. To earn Ruby certification, a power supply tested at 115 V must achieve:
- 85% efficiency at 5% load
- 91% efficiency at 10% load
- 93% efficiency at 20% load
- 95% efficiency at 50% load
- 91% efficiency at 100% load
- Power factor of at least 0.95 at 20% load
The inclusion of 5% and 10% load points is significant. Power supplies must now demonstrate efficiency not only at medium and high loads, but also when the system is largely idle — which is where many systems operate most of the time.
Meeting these targets requires advances across the full platform, including switching control, thermal design, component selection, and validation. Modern desktop systems, workstations, and AI-oriented configurations place sudden, high-amplitude load swings on the power supply. Higher conversion efficiency reduces energy lost as heat and reduces cooling requirements — an advantage that becomes increasingly important in denser, large-scale installations.
Ruby sets a new standard for what high-performance power supplies can achieve, including efficiency at low load — which is where most systems spend the majority of their time,”
said Jeremy Townsend, Senior Vice President, Delivery Services, CLEAResult.“Sea Sonic has been part of the 80 PLUS® program since the beginning, and this milestone reflects what the program was designed to drive: real efficiency improvements that reduce energy waste and lower costs for businesses and consumers.
We expect Ruby to help set the pace for what manufacturers will be working toward heading into 2027. Congratulations to Sea Sonic for this achievement.
Seasonic 80 PLUS® milestones
- 2005 – First 115V 80 PLUS® Standard-certified PC power supply (SS-400HT)
- 2008 – First 115V 80 PLUS® Gold-certified power supply
- 2026 – First 115V power supply to pass 80 PLUS® Ruby requirements (PRIME ENTERPRISE RX-1600)
Ruby is the latest step in Sea Sonic’s continued push for efficiency and engineering excellence. As with earlier platforms, the goal remains to combine high efficiency with stable electrical performance, effective thermal management, and long-term reliability.
