The Seasonic ran noticeably cooler, dropping CPU temperature by 3°C and case temperature by 2°C, while exhausting far cooler air. The very first power supply approved for 80 PLUS® certification was the Seasonic SS-400HT (Active PFC F3 version), a 400W ATX12V v2.0 unit. It received certification around February 2005, with reviews and announcements from mid-2005, making it the first market-ready PSU to meet the 80 PLUS® efficiency standard (≥80% efficiency at 20 %, 50 %, and 100 % load).
It was an OEM-style unit in plain packaging that helped kick off broader adoption. The SS-401HT is the standard (non-80 PLUS®) version of this pioneer power supply. It has slightly lower efficiency overall, though still very good for its era due to Active PFC.

There were times, when the power supplies we received turned out to be true heroes, like this story from Jonas M. testifies: “I just want to give a message to the engineers working on the old SSP-550RT unit.
I am affiliated with an office, who refuses to let go of their old editing machines. It’s all running early Windows 8 builds, offline from internet, but connected to local network and help produce media for their company.
They’ve recently invested heavily in new gear, employees, locations and equipment, and have pretty much used all liquid money to do so. No big deal; a huge project was coming to a close and would stop the payment flow issues.
Then disaster struck; severe weather took out a nearby power station, taking the grid offline in our district with a severe and nasty brown out as a failure. Three of the four editing machines got taken completely out, and the power supplies fried very components on the board.
The last one was running the pictured unit below and luckily had a complete copy of the work that they’re working on. This old power supply saved a company, the livelihood of its employees and an embarrassment if the delivery of the material on the PC was not delivered.
So, thank you for that, please give info to engineers who worked on it.”
