It’s not very common to see real wood used in PC builds. And when it does appear, it’s often decorative — thin panels, veneers, something added at the end. That isn’t how Aguel Design approaches it.
Based in Finland, Aku Kainulainen works with wood as a starting point, not an afterthought. In his builds, the material stays visible. The grain is part of the design, the texture is left intact, and every piece behaves a little differently. That variation isn’t a problem to solve — it’s the reason to use wood in the first place.
What makes the story more interesting is how recent it is. Aku has only been modding PCs for about a year.
From Carpentry
to
PC Modding
The shift started while Aku was upgrading his own computer. During that process, he realized that the skills he already had from carpentry — shaping wood, understanding how it reacts, working with natural imperfections — could be applied here as well.
There was no long-term plan at the time. Just curiosity.
That first build was enough to change direction completely. One project led to another, ideas started to grow, and the scope expanded quickly. As Aku describes it himself, after the first build, things “got out of hand.” In practice, that meant experimenting more freely and spending more time thinking about how traditional materials could coexist with modern PC hardware.
Working with Natural Materials
Wood sits at the center of almost everything Aku builds. Part of the appeal is that it refuses to be uniform. No two pieces are identical, and that forces decisions to be made during the build instead of following a fixed blueprint. Small imperfections aren’t hidden or corrected away. They remain part of the final object.
Alongside wood, one shape appears again and again: the hexagon. It brings structure and repetition into otherwise organic designs, creating a balance between natural texture and geometric order. The combination gives his systems a distinct identity — handcrafted, but deliberate rather than random.
Modding as Personal Expression
For Aku, PC modding isn’t about chasing trends or building for attention. It’s primarily a form of self-expression. Each project reflects where he is creatively at that moment. Some builds are more experimental, others more refined, but all of them feel personal. That approach likely comes from his background in carpentry, where the process matters just as much as the finished result. Instead of following a fixed style, his work evolves naturally as his confidence and experience grow.
The “Oak Block” Project and Seasonic
One project that stands out is the “Oak Block” build. It was the first time Aku had the opportunity to integrate a Seasonic power supply and fans directly into a system built around wood.
For material-driven builds, component design matters. The hardware can’t dominate visually, but it also can’t be a weak point structurally or electrically. Aku values the fact that Seasonic components look clean and consistent, making them easier to integrate into custom designs.
Just as important is trust. When the surrounding structure is built from scratch, reliability becomes non-negotiable. Knowing the power supply will perform as expected allows full focus on design and execution.
Inspiration, Community, and Growth
Aku draws inspiration mainly from visual aesthetics and from other modders in the community. Being relatively new to PC modding, he pays close attention to how others approach materials, layouts, and finishing techniques.
That inspiration isn’t about copying ideas. It’s about learning, adapting, and slowly defining his own direction. The influence is visible, but the outcome remains personal.
Looking Ahead: A Personal Dream Build
At the moment, Aku is working on an update to his own personal computer — a project he already refers to as his future dream build. Details are still evolving, but the intention is clear: refine what already works, push the material further, and keep strengthening the connection between craftsmanship and technology.
Aguel Design is still early in its story, but the identity is already there. And considering how much progress has been made in just one year, it feels less like a brief experiment and more like the foundation of something long-term.
