What is 80 PLUS® Ruby certification for power supplies?

80 PLUS® Ruby certification is the highest efficiency level for redundant data center power supplies within the 80 PLUS® certification program. As of now, Ruby is available exclusively for redundant data-center PSUs designed for environments with redundant infrastructure and rated for 230 V, 277 V, and 480 V AC or 380 V DC.

It’s important to understand how Ruby differs from other 80 PLUS® certification levels. It’s not aimed at basic desktop PCs or gaming PSUs. Its core use case is high-efficiency servers and data center systems, where even small energy losses can significantly affect overall power consumption and thermal load.

80 PLUS® Ruby certification evaluates specific aspects of PSU performance: energy efficiency and power factor. It does not assess the overall quality or reliability of the PSU. The certification itself does not define component quality or other aspects of PSU performance beyond its specific efficiency and power factor requirements.

Technical requirements and performance standards of 80 PLUS® Ruby certification

Under the 80 PLUS® Ruby certification specification, power supplies certified to the Ruby efficiency level must achieve 90% efficiency at 5% load, 91% at 10%, 95% at 20%, 96.5% at 50%, and 92% at 100% load. For data centers and AI infrastructure with high computing density, this level of efficiency helps reduce energy losses and heat generation.

Requirements have also been established for the power factor, which must reach 0.96 at 20%, 50%, and 100% load. A separate efficiency requirement at 5% load is important for server systems, which may operate at a significantly lower actual load than their maximum rated power.

For data centers, this has a direct practical impact. Higher efficiency means that a smaller portion of the electricity consumed is lost as heat within the PSU. On the scale of an infrastructure with thousands of servers, this helps keep overall power consumption, heat generation, and cooling demand lower. 80 PLUS® Ruby certification focuses on efficiency and power factor. It does not certify other aspects of PSU performance or quality, such as long-term reliability, component quality, noise and ripple, transient response, or protection features. These characteristics require separate testing and evaluation and should be considered independently when assessing a power supply for demanding data center applications.

Why high-efficiency power supplies are important for data center infrastructure

Power supply enhanced efficiency directly affects the overall data center energy efficiency level. When a power supply converts electrical energy with fewer losses, less of that energy is turned into heat. 80 PLUS® Ruby is the highest efficiency certification level in the 80 PLUS® program, but it focuses on a different use case than the previous levels. Titanium remains the highest tier for a wide range of high-efficiency desktops and workstations, while Ruby is geared toward the next level of energy efficiency specifically for redundant data center infrastructure.

Ruby’s main advantage over Titanium is evident at 50% load, where the efficiency requirement is 96.5% compared to 96% for Titanium, as well as at 5% and 20% loads. Ruby maintains at least 90% efficiency even at a 5% load, helping to reduce energy loss even in low-power modes.

How to choose a power supply for your data center equipment in 2026?

When choosing a power supply for the data center, don’t rely only on its nominal power capacity. Since data centers handle specific tasks and have custom requirements for power delivery, including extreme loads, several factors must be considered to make the right choice.
