Since the inception of Sea Sonic in 1975, Mr. J.C. Chang, the founder and chief engineer, has always placed a focus on both natural resource sustainability through product design, and energy savings through performance efficiency in the company’s manufacturing and product operations.
This environmentally conscious philosophy has remained at the core of Sea Sonic’s DNA and this did not go unnoticed. In 2004, EcosConsulting, recognizing the company’s immense technical knowhow, asked Sea Sonic to be its partner to launch the all-important 80 PLUS® certification initiative to promote energy savings in the PC industry and thereby reducing overall carbon emissions. A year later, the world’s very first 80 PLUS®-certified power supply was brought to market under the Seasonic brand name.
Beyond its products and manufacturing efficiencies, with sustainability in mind, Sea Sonic has through the years also introduced processes and procedures within its offices and factories, that prioritize keeping overall waste at its minimum level and increase the recycling of materials. By educating employees about the importance of sustainability and working with partners to devise new solutions to reduce our carbon footprint around the globe, Sea Sonic entered a new phase of striving for overall sustainability.
To put these efforts into perspective, in 2023, Sea Sonic decreased greenhouse gas (GHG) emission intensity by 10 % and achieved a nearly 10 % reduction in group energy intensity consumption compared to the previous year. By upgrading its manufacturing efficiency via implementation of cutting-edge technology, Sea Sonic was able to reduce unit manufacturing hours for its popular VERTEX and FOCUS Series by nearly 11 %. Based on the 2023 sales volume of approximately 1,000,000 power supply units, with an average power output of 850 W per unit, and assuming half-load usage for 8 hours per day, it is estimated that a savings of about 62.05 million kWh can be achieved annually, reducing carbon emissions by approximately 30,653 tons of carbon dioxide.
Sea Sonic’s sustainability process and standard was recognized by receiving an SGS AA1000ASv3 Type 1 Moderate Level of Assurance Certificate.
In 2023, efforts to reduce environmental pollution and minimize the negative impact on our ecosystems included replacing printed materials and promoting digital product manuals to reduce paper usage. The company also made a sustainable switch from traditional light bulbs to LED flat lamps in its offices, saving 40,000 kWh electricity per year. Demonstrating its commitment to employee development, management increased the number of training courses related to sustainability, investing significantly in employee training with a 131 % increase compared to 2022.
Under its global awareness program, Sea Sonic continuously embraces environmental mindfulness by supporting initiatives such as the WWF’s Earth Hour event to conserve energy. Sea Sonic is also a sponsor for UNICEF’s Plastic Bricks Project in West Africa to help employ locals to collect plastic waste and transform the material into bricks to build new schools for the children. Moving forward, the company remains steadfast in its mission to maximize every eco-friendly step in its design and manufacturing processes, while recognizing the importance of support and cooperation from its partners, customers, and employees for its continued success.
